Billington Group based in Wickersley, Rotherham, were one of the beneficiaries of funding for language training provided through the Learning and Skills council.
The company supplies products for the industrial, storage and handling, robotics and leisure industry sectors. The Regional Language Network Yorkshire and the Humber helped the company to identify the assistance they required for Swedish language training.
Matlock-based Commercial Language Training then provided a Swedish tutor to deliver intensive on-site training at times convenient to the company over a four week period. Diane Billington, a director of the Billington Group, reported that she had enjoyed the training. "Without the funding, small businesses like ourselves would not benefit from this. However, now I feel I can approach Swedish companies with more knowledge and confidence. The Swedish training will help a lot with this. It is nice to go to their country and show them you want to learn a little of their language. It is very good for business."
100% funding for the business language training was made available after an application by the Rotherham Language Strategy Group, to the Learning and Skills Council.
The Regional Language Network has been an active member of the Rotherham Language Strategy Group since its inception. The aim of the Strategy is to transform, encourage and support language teaching and learning, to highlight good practice, to audit language and cultural skills needs for the town and to devise appropriate action plans.
Following the successful development and launch of the Rotherham Language Strategy in September 2006, RLNYH has been involved in implementing a number of activities with specific responsibility for organising bespoke business language training for Rotherham employees.
