BUSINESS LANGUAGE CHAMPION CASE STUDY
FILEY SCHOOL BUSINESS LANGUAGE PROJECT PUTS TOGETHER
AN AIRBUS A380 AIRCRAFT
In a unique training partnership with UK consultancy Leadergen,
Filey School have just completed the cycle of internal negotiations to simulate the kitting-out of an Airbus A380 airliner. The Year 10 French language class here seen with Leadergen’s Senior Associate, Graeme Thomas, have over the last year worked hard to learn and apply the negotiation and business language techniques necessary to simulate the purchase and sale of components to kit-out an A380. These skills are great to have in the present tough labour market and have also picked-up interest in language learning at Filey. Items such as the emergency floor lighting, catering trolleys and display equipment have all been included in the competitive negotiations.
In the final session, students representing Airbus component buyers and rival sales companies fought out their sales battles in the French language at an imaginary Paris Air Show. Competition was fierce but deals were closed and battles won.
“It is really exciting to see such dynamic results of the Business Language Champion partnership between Graeme Thomas at Leadergen and Nick Messenger at FileySchool. Graeme’s extensive knowledge of international trade has been invaluable inspiration for the ‘Paris Air Show Trade Game’.
"We developed our skills in communication with others in another language," said one of FileySchool’s students. "It gave us a good insight into using French in a real business situation".
The collaboration between FileySchool and Leadergen was initiated by the partnership between Regional Language Network Yorkshire & Humber and North Yorkshire Business Education Partnership for the Business Language Champions programme.
