Going Global
Written by Catriona MacLeod, NE Leeds City Learning Centre in collaboration with Simon Brass, Brigshaw School, Leeds. These 30 hours of motivating business Spanish language materials were trialled in Spanish, French and German at North East City Learning Centre and at Brigshaw School and learner outcomes are successfully mapped to the Asset assessment scheme for the DCSF Languages Ladder.

The materials are based on, and complement, one of 10 modules in the 'Young International Trader' programme,
developed by the Institute of Export. This programme provides key stage 4 students with an introduction to
international trade, in English, as part of Enterprise Education.
find out more  nationally only the brightest pupils tend to take languages now... in the position of
looking for alternative forms of accreditation for 70% of our children, as we can no
longer tolerate the situation where languages are seen as 'too hard' and impossible
to succeed in.
This drove us to introduce a course .called 'Business Languages', working closely with NE Leeds CLC on the Going Global package. [Development and production managed by RLNYH.] This course has been incredibly successful, especially because of the impact it's had on boys' motivation....

Results from the first year have been very pleasing; at the lower end, pupils who would have struggled
to achieve a Grade G at GCSE have been motivated and many have already achieved the equivalent of
an E or F; the 'middle of the range' pupils have really benefited from this new approach - out of a group
of 20 pupils 50 % have already achieved the equivalent of Grade C or above in two skill areas and are
now determined to succeed in Year 11.

None of these pupils would have achieved a Grade C or above in GCSE, but the business related nature
of the course and the Asset style of testing have enabled them to become re-engaged and motivated in
language learning.
Simon Brass, Deputy Head, Brigshaw School, West Yorkshire NB Initial development phase of this material was funded through a Learning Skills Network Vocational Learning project
and the materials are the property of the QIA. Funding did not include in professional quality production format. The
materials may not be reproduced in any form without the permission.

Although the initial development phase was restricted to 14-19 learners, these materials are just as useful for adult
and company language learning.
